Spousal and common-law sponsorship
If you're a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may be able to sponsor your spouse or partner to become a permanent resident. The application lives or dies on the evidence, so that's where we spend our time.
Who it's for
- Canadian citizens and permanent residents, 18 or older, sponsoring a partner
- Married spouses, wherever the marriage took place
- Common-law partners who've lived together for at least 12 months in a row
- Conjugal partners who can't live together for reasons outside their control
How we help
- Check eligibility for both of you before anything gets filed
- Walk through applying from inside or outside Canada
- Plan the relationship evidence so it tells a clear, consistent story
- Prepare, review, and submit the full application
- Handle IRCC's follow-up requests after you apply
Common questions
Do we have to be married?
No. Common-law partners who've lived together for at least 12 consecutive months can apply, and in limited cases, so can conjugal partners.
Should we apply from inside or outside Canada?
It depends on where your partner lives now, whether they need to travel while the application is processing, and whether they need to work while they wait. We'll go through the tradeoffs with you in your consultation.
What does the sponsor agree to?
The sponsor signs an undertaking to financially support their spouse or partner for 3 years from the day they become a permanent resident. That commitment holds even if the relationship ends.
How long does it take?
Processing times change often, so we don't quote a number from memory. We'll check IRCC's current posted estimate with you when we meet.
